The Northern Ireland Economic Conference, now in its 14th year, has become firmly established as the annual autumn ‘economic summit’ for Northern Ireland and is unique in providing a one day forum for leaders of organisations in both the public and private sectors to examine Northern Ireland’s economic prospects. The challenges facing the Northern Ireland economy are even greater now than at any time during the conference’s fourteen year history as the global economy is in turmoil and Northern Ireland is sharing in the pain of job losses and the other effects of the first UK recession since 1991. Although many commentators believe Northern Ireland is shielded to some extent from the worst of the economic downturn by its high dependence on the public sector, there has been strong evidence to date of its effects in terms of job losses, particularly in the manufacturing sector.
The Executive, in its Programme for Government, has committed to addressing ‘the structural weaknesses in our economy’ with a focus on growing the private sector, increasing productivity and supporting growth in well-paid high-skilled jobs. Although the economic circumstances have changed significantly from when the government set out its spending proposals at the start of 2008, these objectives remain at the top of the Executive’s priorities. This year’s annual Northern Ireland Economic Conference will examine these, and other options for bringing Northern Ireland back to a period of economic growth.
