Who should attend?

If you work in...

Government departments

Policy-making is an important function of every government and it is vital that those involved in policy development roles have an understanding of how the process works, how to use evidence to support policy-making and the key issues that should be central to policy-making in the Northern Ireland context. The skills of the policy-maker can often be key to a policy’s success.

Agencies or Non-Departmental Public Bodies

Those working in these organisations, which are often customer-facing and have a defined remit, have an important role to carry out in implementing policy and translating policy decisions into practical outcomes in terms of programmes and projects. An understanding of how policy is formulated will be a useful asset to anyone in this type of role.

Frontline service delivery

Good policy-making does not stop at high-level Ministerial statements of objective. Often it is frontline staff who are best placed to recognise how public services can respond better to users’ needs and who have direct experience of what customers need, value and want. It is important that those in frontline service delivery roles understand how policy is formulated so they have a better opportunity to influence overall policy direction.

The voluntary or community sector

A knowledge of the policy-making process is vital to those leading campaigns or lobbying on issues within the voluntary and community sector. This seminar will provide an understanding of the process and attendees will learn how to influence policy development at key stages.
